For: students who have finished the advanced level

Reading
Given The Economist’s exemplary command of expressive English and the seeming ease with which it straddles a number of stylistic fences (formal/colloquial, metaphorical/concrete to name two), the magazine is an obvious choice for the base text for any truly advanced English class.

Note that the teacher will not be exclusively responsible for deciding what is read, but rather the class will come to as democratic as possible a decision, with the teacher’s input perhaps having greater weight where particularly vocabulary- or structure-rich articles are screaming to be read.

Speaking
In addition to discussing the grammar, vocabulary, structure and logic of the English language, we will go over the articles we read for class, debate issues, and generally talk about the state of the world.

Students will also be expected to lead one or two classes over the course of the year about a topic of their own choosing—from the history of combs to the combing over of history for any little nugget they think might interest themselves and the rest of the class.

Writing
Short writings will be done in journal form, frequently, and mostly in response to what we read. The focus here will be on practicing the vocabulary and structures we encounter in our reading, and also to find direction for longer writing assignments. I would also be open to doing character sketches, short stories, articles, ‘position papers’, a long final paper or a longer class project that we could potentially send to one of the publications we will have used during the year.

This class is for those who:
want to move away from strictly teacher-based instruction
enjoy discussing and debating issues, especially current events from across the globe
are self-motivated
are prepared to buy appropriate periodicals during the year
love learning phrasal verbs and the play between formal and informal English
